Sunshine Follows Rain
© 2014 Kevin Winchester
Young girl in the hallway, leaning by the stairs
Like an anchor dropped in quicksand, she ain’t going nowhere
After two shifts at the diner, she dries her baby’s tears.
She keeps her past behind her, and she’s older than her years
And she knows, sunshine always follows rain,
And she knows, sometimes pleasure comes from pain.
When the world knocks you down, you get back up again, ‘cause:
Sunshine always follows rain.
Young man waits at sunrise, outside the Home Depot.
He’ll cut your grass, he’ll haul your trash, he’ll make your flowers grow.
He was a banker in his homeland when the sicarios arrived.
Brought his family north in the dark of night to keep them all alive.
And she knows, sunshine always follows rain,
And she knows, sometimes pleasure comes from pain.
When the world knocks you down, you get back up again, ‘cause:
Sunshine always follows rain.
Take a look around you, when the cold wind starts to blow.
There’s someone with a harder row to hoe.
So take some time for laughter, and dancing every day,
Cause sunshine always follows rain
Old man on the front porch, rocking in his chair.
The crickets all stopped buzzing, there’s a stillness in the air.
Another day is fading, you try to make it last.
Like a shooting star across the sky, it all goes by so fast.
And she knows, sunshine always follows rain,
And she knows, sometimes pleasure comes from pain.
When the world knocks you down, you get back up again, ‘cause:
Sunshine always follows rain.

Front Porch
©Kevin Winchester 2009/2015
On my front porch late at night, the thunder rolls, some twenty miles away.
Breeze is blowing from the south now, don’t you know, it smells just like rain.
Honeysuckle’s come in bloom and I don’t know what to do without you.
Storm is moving closer now, day’s at end, and I still feel the same.
As the rain begins to fall down, I fool myself and softly call your name.
I just want to talk to you, hear your voice, one more time again.
Sometimes I wonder why, sky’s are dark and the ocean’s wide
What makes the bright stars shine and what became of all our time.
And the things that hurt the most are all the things
I’ll never know about you.
I dreamed I saw a field of heather and somewhere a song began to play.
There were mountains in the distance, the path was dark, I could not find my way.
And then I heard your voice so sweetly, soft and pure, you sang Amazing Grace.
We’ve been there ten thousand years, still your face is shining like the sun.
But my dream is over now, I wake to find another day’s begun.
You touched my life and gave me song and it’s so hard to carry on without you.
On my front porch late at night, the thunder rolls, some twenty miles away.

Whatcha Gonna Do

Whatcha Gonna Do?
Whatcha gonna do when I walk out the door?
Pack my bags and pick my boots off the floor.
Who you gonna call in the middle of the night
when your poor heart is aching and things ain't right?
Whatcha gonna do when your friends see I'm gone?
Don't know what happened, guess things went wrong.
Who you gonna call when the nights get long?
Nobody to talk to, you just stare at the phone.
You should've thought about this before.
So many times, you know I've walked out your door.
Kept coming back like you knew I would.
This time baby, now I'm gone for good.
This time, baby, now I'm gone for good.
This time, this time, this time, baby, now I'm gone for good.
Whatcha gonna do when your momma calls ?
Says her little boy don't come around now at all.
Who you gonna call when the nights get long?
Nobody to talk to, you just stay at the phone.
Whatcha gonna do when they play our song?
Babe, I won't be crying when you dance alone.
Who you gonna call when your dog don't come home?
Now your best friends gone and now you're all alone.
You should've thought about this before.
So many times, you know I've walked out your door.
Kept coming back like you knew I would.
This time baby, now I'm gone for good.
This time, baby, now I'm gone for good.
This time, this time, this time, baby, now I'm gone for good.
Babe, there's a New Moon rising right outside your door.
I ain't coming back now, honey. I ain't coming back no more. No more.
This time, baby, now I'm gone for good.
This time, this time, this time, baby, now I'm gone for good.
This time, this time, this time, baby, now I'm gone for good.
This time, this time, this time, baby, now I'm gone for good.
